How to Paint Cast Aluminum Patio Furniture

Cast aluminum patio furniture is often an excellent addition to your outdoor living area due to its durability and affordability. However, over time, it can start looking a little faded or outdated, and a fresh coat of paint can bring it back to life. Painting cast aluminum patio furniture is a relatively easy project if you follow the steps outlined below.

Materials Needed:

  • Cast aluminum patio furniture
  • Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
  • Cleaning solution
  • TSP cleaner (optional)
  • Automotive primer
  • Exterior latex paint (specifically designed for metal)
  • Brushes and/or paint sprayer
  • Clear spray sealant (optional)

Step 1: Preparation

Start by cleaning the furniture thoroughly using a cleaning solution and a sponge. If the furniture is very dirty, you may want to use a TSP cleaner to remove any grease or grime. After cleaning, rinse the furniture well with water and allow it to dry completely.

Once the furniture is dry, sand it with 120-grit sandpaper to remove any loose paint or rust. Be sure to sand in the direction of the grain. After sanding, wipe the furniture down with a tack cloth to remove any dust.

Step 2: Priming

Apply a coat of automotive primer to the furniture, allowing it to dry completely. This will help the paint to adhere better to the aluminum.

Step 3: Painting

Using a brush or paint sprayer, apply a coat of exterior latex paint specifically designed for metal to the furniture. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying a second coat. If you are using a paint sprayer, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 4: Sealing (Optional)

Once the paint is dry, you can apply a clear spray sealant to protect the finish. This is not necessary but is recommended if you want to extend the life of the paint job.

Tips:

  • Be sure to use a paint that is specifically designed for metal. Regular paint will not adhere well to aluminum and will likely peel off.
  • Allow each coat of paint to dry completely before applying the next coat. This will help to prevent the paint from peeling or chipping.
  • If you are using a paint sprayer, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions and wear a respirator.
  • Be patient and take your time. Painting cast aluminum patio furniture can be a time-consuming project, but the results are worth it.
