How to Slope a Paver Patio

Sloping a paver patio is an essential step to ensure proper drainage and prevent water damage. By creating a gentle slope away from your home, you can direct rainwater and melted snow away from the foundation, protecting your home from leaks and flooding.

Steps to Slope a Paver Patio:

1. Establish the Drainage Point:

First, determine the lowest point where you want rainwater to drain away from your home. This will be the starting point for your slope.

2. Set the Stakes:

Drive two stakes at the starting point, about 6 feet apart. Use a level to mark a line parallel to the edge of your home and extending at least 6 feet out.

3. Create the Slope:

Measure the height difference between the starting point and the desired drainage point. Divide this difference by the length of the slope to determine the slope ratio. For example, if the height difference is 6 inches and the slope is 12 feet long, the slope ratio would be 6/12, or 0.5.

4. Install the String Line:

Attach a string line to the stakes at the starting point. Measure the mark you made in step 2 and adjust the string line to the appropriate height at the drainage point, using the slope ratio you calculated.

5. Prepare the Base:

Excavate the area where your patio will be located to a depth of 4-6 inches. Compact the base firmly using a hand tamper or compactor.

6. Spread the Sand:

Spread a 2-3 inch layer of sand over the base and level it using a screed or tamper. Compact the sand to create a firm, stable surface.

7. Lay the Pavers:

Start laying the pavers along the string line, ensuring they are level and flush with each other. Use a rubber mallet to tap them into place.

8. Maintain the Slope:

As you lay the pavers, use a level to ensure they are sloping away from your home. Adjust the sand bed as needed to maintain the desired slope.

9. Finish and Compact:

Once all the pavers are in place, fill the joints with sand and brush it in using a broom. Compact the entire patio surface firmly to ensure a stable and durable finish.
