How to Properly Slope a Paver Patio Block

Sloping your paver patio block is essential to ensure proper drainage, prevent water pooling, and extend the lifespan of your patio. Follow these steps for a perfect slope:

Materials:

Paver patio blocks
1/4-inch slope gauge
Level
Sand or gravel (for bedding)
Polymeric sand

Step 1: Determine the Slope

Use a 1/4-inch slope gauge to measure a 1/4-inch drop per foot of patio length. This slope allows for proper drainage without causing excessive water flow.

Step 2: Prepare the Base

Excavate the area for your patio to a depth of 4-6 inches. Spread 2-3 inches of sand or gravel for bedding and compact it. Level the base using a level and slope gauge.

Step 3: Lay the First Row of Blocks

Starting from the lowest point, lay the first row of paver blocks along the edge. Use a level to ensure they are level both laterally and longitudinally.

Step 4: Set the Slope

Place the slope gauge on top of the first row of blocks and adjust the blocks accordingly to achieve the desired slope. Use a level to recheck the slope and make any necessary adjustments.

Step 5: Continue Laying Blocks

Continue laying subsequent rows of blocks, following the established slope and maintaining the level and alignment. Use a rubber mallet to tap the blocks into place and ensure tight fit.

Step 6: Fill Gaps and Compact

Fill the gaps between the blocks with polymeric sand. Use a broom to spread the sand evenly and then compact the patio with a plate compactor or a hand tamper.

Step 7: Finish

After compacting, remove any excess sand and add a final layer of polymeric sand to fill in any remaining gaps. Sweep the patio to remove any loose material.
