How To Build A Freestanding Patio Cover Out Of Wood

A freestanding patio cover is a great way to add shade and protection from the elements to your outdoor living space. It can also increase the value of your home. Building a freestanding patio cover is a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend with the right tools and materials.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Pressure-treated lumber
  • Concrete footings
  • Post anchors
  • Lag bolts
  • Roofing material
  • Gutters and downspouts

Tools You'll Need:

  • Circular saw
  • Miter saw
  • Drill
  • Level
  • Tape measure
  • Shovel
  • Concrete mixer

Step 1: Plan Your Patio Cover

The first step is to plan your patio cover. Decide where you want it to be located and how big you want it to be. You'll also need to decide what type of roof you want. Once you have a plan, you can start gathering your materials.

Step 2: Build the Footings

The footings are what will support your patio cover. Dig four holes for the footings, each hole should be 12 inches deep and 12 inches wide. Place a concrete footing in each hole and level it. Allow the concrete to cure for 24 hours.

Step 3: Install the Posts

The posts will support the roof of your patio cover. Cut four posts to the desired height. Install a post anchor in each footing and then insert the posts into the anchors. Level the posts and secure them with lag bolts.

Step 4: Build the Rafters

The rafters will support the roofing material. Cut four rafters to the desired length. Assemble the rafters on the ground and then lift them into place. Secure the rafters to the posts with lag bolts.

Step 5: Install the Roofing

Install the roofing material according to the manufacturer's instructions. Start by installing the underlayment and then install the roofing shingles.

Step 6: Install the Gutters and Downspouts

The gutters and downspouts will help to protect your patio cover from water damage. Install the gutters along the edge of the roof and then install the downspouts. Direct the downspouts away from your patio.

Step 7: Enjoy Your Patio Cover

Your freestanding patio cover is now complete. Enjoy the shade and protection from the elements that it provides. You can also use your patio cover to entertain guests or simply relax and enjoy the outdoors.
