How to Build Patio Furniture: A Step-by-Step Guide with Drawings

Building your own patio furniture is a great way to save money and get exactly what you want. It's also a fun and rewarding project that can be enjoyed by people of all skill levels.

In this step-by-step guide, we'll show you how to build a simple and stylish patio chair. The chair is made from cedar, which is a naturally weather-resistant wood. With proper care, your chair should last for many years.

Materials

  • 2x4 cedar boards (8 pieces, each 36 inches long)
  • 2x6 cedar boards (2 pieces, each 18 inches long)
  • 1x6 cedar boards (4 pieces, each 18 inches long)
  • Wood screws (2 inches long)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Stain or paint (optional)

Tools

  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Countersink bit
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Hammer
  • Nail set

Instructions

  1. Cut the legs. The four legs of the chair will be made from 2x4 cedar boards. Cut the boards to the following lengths:
    • 2 pieces, each 36 inches long
    • 2 pieces, each 32 inches long
  2. Assemble the legs. Place the four legs together in a square, with the 36-inch legs on the outside and the 32-inch legs on the inside. Glue and screw the legs together at the corners.
  3. Cut the seat supports. The two seat supports will be made from 2x6 cedar boards. Cut the boards to the following lengths:
    • 2 pieces, each 18 inches long
  4. Attach the seat supports. Place the seat supports on top of the legs, flush with the top of the legs. Glue and screw the seat supports to the legs.
  5. Cut the seat slats. The four seat slats will be made from 1x6 cedar boards. Cut the boards to the following lengths:
    • 4 pieces, each 18 inches long
  6. Attach the seat slats. Space the seat slats evenly across the seat supports and glue and screw them in place.
  7. Cut the back slats. The five back slats will be made from 1x6 cedar boards. Cut the boards to the following lengths:
    • 1 piece, 36 inches long
    • 2 pieces, each 32 inches long
    • 2 pieces, each 28 inches long
  8. Attach the back slats. Space the back slats evenly across the back of the chair and glue and screw them in place.
  9. Sand and finish. Sand the chair smooth and apply a stain or paint of your choice.
