1. Plan and Design

Start by determining the location, height, and width of your steps. Consider the overall design of your patio and ensure the steps complement the existing aesthetic. Sketch out a plan that includes the number of steps, the riser height (vertical elevation), and the tread depth (horizontal distance). Aim for a riser height of 6-8 inches and a tread depth of 12-18 inches, providing a comfortable and safe ascent.

2. Gather Materials and Tools

You will need the following materials:

Concrete blocks or pavers for risers and treads
Compacted gravel or crushed stone for filling
Concrete mix
Rebar (optional, for reinforcement)
Landscape edging

Tools you will need include:

Level
Trowel
Rubber mallet
Circular saw or paver cutter
Masonry brush

3. Prepare the Base

Excavate the area where the steps will be constructed to a depth of at least 6 inches. Level the base and tamp down several inches of compacted gravel or crushed stone. This will provide a stable and well-drained foundation for your steps.

4. Build the Risers

Start by laying the first row of concrete blocks or pavers as your bottom riser. Use a level to ensure they are level. For the subsequent rows, stagger the joints for added strength. Use concrete mix to secure the blocks or pavers together, spreading it evenly and smoothing it out with a trowel. If desired, insert rebar into the joints for reinforcement.

5. Create the Treads

Once the risers are complete, fill the space between them with compacted gravel or crushed stone. Tamp it down firmly. Then, place the concrete blocks or pavers for the treads on top of the gravel, maintaining the proper tread depth. Use a rubber mallet to level the treads and ensure they are flush with the risers.

6. Add Edging

Install landscape edging around the perimeter of the steps to define the edges and prevent the steps from shifting. Secure the edging firmly into the ground.

7. Finish and Seal

Clean the steps with a masonry brush to remove any excess concrete or debris. Allow the concrete to cure for the recommended time, which typically takes a few days. Finally, seal the steps with an appropriate sealant to protect them from the elements and enhance their longevity.
