Materials Required:
- Concrete mix
- Pavers
- Sand
- Polymeric sand
- Edging material (optional)
- Level
- Trowel
- Tamper
- Joints tool
Step 1: Determine the Dimensions and Layout
Calculate the dimensions of your patio steps based on the desired height and width. Determine the number of steps needed, ensuring each step is approximately 6-8 inches tall and 36 inches wide. Mark the layout of the steps using stakes and string.
Step 2: Excavate the Area
Excavate the area where the steps will be located, removing soil and debris to the appropriate depth. Ensure the ground is level and compact before proceeding to the next step.
Step 3: Build the Concrete Base
Create a concrete base for the steps by pouring concrete into the excavated area. Level the concrete using a screed or level. Allow the concrete to cure completely before continuing.
Step 4: Dry Set the Pavers
Place the pavers onto the cured concrete base in the desired pattern. Dry set the pavers by gently tapping them into place, ensuring they are level and aligned.
Step 5: Apply Mortar
Spread a thin layer of mortar over the concrete base and between the pavers. Use a trowel to smooth the mortar and fill any gaps.
Step 6: Remove Excess Mortar
After applying the mortar, remove any excess by wiping it away with a damp sponge or brush. Clean the pavers and allow the mortar to set.
Step 7: Fill the Joints
Once the mortar is set, fill the joints between the pavers with polymeric sand. Use a joints tool to distribute the sand evenly and compact it into place. This material will prevent weeds and insects from growing in the joints.
Step 8: Seal the Pavers (Optional)
For added durability and protection against staining, consider sealing the pavers with a concrete sealer. Apply the sealer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
