How to Cover Patio Chair Cushions with Fabric
Patio chair cushions add comfort and style to your outdoor space, but they can also fade and deteriorate over time. If your cushions are looking tired, you can easily recover them with new fabric to give them a fresh look. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you cover patio chair cushions with fabric.
1. Gather Your Materials
Before you start, you will need the following materials:
- New fabric
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Zipper (optional)
2. Measure the Cushions
First, you need to measure the cushions to determine how much fabric you will need. Measure the length, width, and height of each cushion. Add 2-3 inches to each measurement for seam allowances.
3. Cut the Fabric
Once you have the measurements, cut the fabric according to the following pattern:
- Two pieces for the top and bottom of the cushion
- Two pieces for the sides of the cushion
- Two pieces for the front and back of the cushion (if you are using a zipper, add 1/2 inch to the width of these pieces for the zipper seam)
- Four pieces for the corners of the cushion (optional)
4. Sew the Cushion Cover
Now, it's time to sew the cushion cover. Start by sewing the side pieces to the top and bottom pieces. Then, sew the front and back pieces to the sides. If you are using a zipper, sew it to the front and back pieces before attaching them to the sides.
5. Insert the Cushion
Once the cushion cover is sewn, turn it right side out and insert the cushion. Make sure the cushion is centered and the seams are aligned.
6. Finish the Cushion
To finish the cushion, you can either hand-sew or machine-sew the opening closed. If you are using a zipper, simply zip it closed.
Tips for Covering Patio Chair Cushions
- Use a durable fabric that is resistant to fading and water.
- Choose a fabric that complements the style of your patio furniture.
- If you are not confident in your sewing skills, you can always take the cushions to a seamstress.
- To make the cushion covers easier to remove and clean, add a zipper to the back.
- If you want to add a little extra flair to your cushions, consider adding piping or trim around the edges.
