How to Make a Replacement Patio Table Top

A patio table is a great way to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family. However, over time, the table top can become damaged or worn. If this happens, you don't have to buy a new table. You can make a replacement table top yourself with a few simple tools and materials.

Materials You Will Need:

  • Plywood (3/4-inch thick)
  • Wood screws (1 1/2-inch)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
  • Polyurethane (optional)

Instructions:

1. Cut the Plywood

Start by measuring the dimensions of your old table top. Once you have the measurements, cut a piece of plywood to the same size.

2. Sand the Plywood

Once the plywood is cut, sand the edges and surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper. This will help to smooth the edges and remove any splinters.

3. Apply Wood Glue

Next, apply a thin layer of wood glue to the edges of the plywood. This will help to hold the pieces together when you screw them.

4. Screw the Plywood Together

Once the wood glue is applied, screw the pieces of plywood together using 1 1/2-inch wood screws. Make sure to countersink the screws slightly so that they don't protrude from the surface.

5. Sand the Table Top

Once the plywood is screwed together, sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper. This will help to smooth the surface and remove any rough edges.

6. Finish the Table Top (Optional)

If desired, you can finish the table top with polyurethane. This will help to protect the table top from moisture and UV damage. To apply the polyurethane, use a brush or roller and apply two thin coats. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second coat.

7. Enjoy Your New Table Top

Once the polyurethane is dry, your new table top is ready to use. Simply place it on your table base and enjoy!

Tips:

  • If you are using a power saw to cut the plywood, be sure to wear safety glasses and earplugs.
  • If you do not have a power saw, you can use a hand saw to cut the plywood. However, this will take more time and effort.
  • Be sure to countersink the screws slightly so that they do not protrude from the surface of the table top.
  • If you are not sure how to apply polyurethane, you can ask a professional for help.
  • With a little effort, you can make a new patio table top that will last for years to come.
