How to Replace Patio Chair Seat Fabric

Faded, torn, or stained seat fabric can detract from the look of your patio chairs. Replacing the fabric is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few hours. With a few basic tools and materials, you can restore your patio chairs to their former glory.

Materials:

  • New seat fabric
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Staple gun and staples
  • Hammer or tack hammer (optional)

Steps:

1. Remove the old fabric.

Using scissors, carefully cut the old fabric away from the chair frame. Be sure to cut close to the frame to avoid any loose threads or frayed edges.

2. Measure the seat.

Measure the length and width of the seat frame. Add 2 to 3 inches to each measurement for overlap.

3. Cut the new fabric.

Cut a piece of new fabric according to your measurements. Be sure to cut the fabric with the grain, which is the direction of the threads. This will help the fabric to stretch evenly and prevent it from tearing.

4. Staple the fabric to the seat frame.

Starting in the center of one of the long sides, staple the fabric to the seat frame. Pull the fabric taut as you staple, but be careful not to stretch it too much. Space the staples about 1 inch apart.

5. Staple the fabric to the other sides of the seat frame.

Continue stapling the fabric to the seat frame, working your way around until all four sides are covered. Be sure to pull the fabric taut and space the staples evenly.

6. Trim the excess fabric.

Once the fabric is stapled in place, trim any excess fabric around the edges of the seat frame.

7. Hammer in the staples (optional).

For added durability, you can hammer in the staples using a hammer or tack hammer. This will help to secure the fabric and prevent it from coming loose.

Congratulations! You have now successfully replaced the seat fabric on your patio chair. Enjoy your newly refreshed chairs!
