How to Spray Paint a Metal Patio Table

A rusty or faded metal patio table can be a real eyesore, but it doesn't have to be. With a little bit of time and effort, you can easily spray paint your table and give it a fresh new look.

Here are the steps on how to spray paint a metal patio table:

Materials You'll Need:

  • Metal patio table
  • Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
  • Tack cloth
  • Metal primer
  • Spray paint (choose a paint specifically designed for metal)
  • Painter's tape (optional)

Step 1: Clean and Sand the Table

Start by cleaning the table with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or debris. Then, sand the table with 120-grit sandpaper to roughen up the surface and help the primer adhere. Once you've sanded the table, wipe it down with a tack cloth to remove any dust.

Step 2: Apply Primer

Shake can of primer well and hold it 8-10 inches from the table. Apply a thin, even coat of primer to the table, making sure to cover all of the surface. Allow the primer to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Apply Spray Paint

Once the primer is dry, you can start applying spray paint. Shake the can of paint well and hold it 8-10 inches from the table. Apply a thin, even coat of paint to the table, making sure to cover all of the surface. Allow the paint to dry completely before applying a second coat.

Step 4: Apply Additional Coats (Optional)

For a more durable finish, you can apply additional coats of spray paint. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.

Step 5: Remove Painter's Tape (Optional)

If you used painter's tape to protect any areas of the table, remove the tape once the paint is completely dry.

Tips:

  • For best results, spray paint in a well-ventilated area.
  • Use light, even strokes when applying the paint.
  • Allow each coat of paint to dry completely before applying the next.
  • For a more durable finish, apply a clear coat of spray paint once the paint is completely dry.

With a little bit of time and effort, you can easily spray paint your metal patio table and give it a fresh new look. Enjoy your newly refinished table!
