How to Tile an Outdoor Concrete Patio

Tiling an outdoor concrete patio is a great way to update the look of your outdoor living space and make it more comfortable and stylish. Here are the essential steps.

Step 1: Prepare the Patio

First, you need to prepare the patio surface by cleaning it thoroughly with a pressure washer or a stiff brush and degreaser. Next, check for any cracks or uneven surfaces and repair them using a concrete patching compound.

Step 2: Install Backer Board

Backer board is a thin, rigid material that is installed over the concrete to provide a smooth and stable surface for the tiles. Cut the backer board to fit the patio and secure it with screws 6 inches apart.

Step 3: Apply Mortar

Mix the mortar according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use a trowel to spread the mortar over the backer board, creating a layer about 1/4 inch thick.

Step 4: Lay the Tiles

Start laying the tiles in the center of the patio and work your way outward. Press the tiles into the mortar and adjust their position using a rubber mallet. Use spacers to ensure even spacing between the tiles.

Step 5: Grout the Tiles

Once the tiles are set, mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. Spread the grout over the tiles and work it into the joints using a grout float. Remove excess grout with a damp sponge.
